On Dysons and other expensive vacuum cleaners

Thought this was interesting: expensive vacuum cleaners (like Dysons) are becoming a kind of status symbol.

"View of vacuum cleaners as status symbols is picking up"

I must confess to being tempted to get a Dyson – I guess the subtle hype was getting to me.

I ended up not getting a Dyson but getting a replacement hose for our old vacuum.

  • :) It's not a status symbol to me. Then again, it's not a Dyson. Still, the extra up front cost of our bagless vacuum cleaner has more than been covered by now because it sucks more, I don't need to buy branded, hard-to-find bags and it's less dusty to empty and clean. Any (bag) vacuum cleaner that I ever used before sucked badly and made the room feel dustier after use, even with newly replaced bags.

    Cheers from Finland. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Valkeakoski,+Finland&aq=0&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=35.082817,56.513672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Valkeakoski,+Finland&ll=-23.241346,-130.78125&spn=179.486169,184.21875&t=h&z=0

  • Hey Jon,
I did get a dyson hand-held vac not because of status but because I was impressed by the "cyclone" marketing ploy. I don't regret it because I got a free 38" tv from a lucky draw. However, as hand vacs go, I would much recommend shimano's 600W handvac, RM199, stronger, not battery powered.

  • @Anonymous - Good point - the bags cost quite a bit.

NG - You're lucky to have one!
